Community and Biodiversity Workshop in Nigeria

In September 2019 Stewart Whiteley participated in and presented at a Community and Biodiversity Workshop in Port Harcourt in Nigeria that was organised by one of Petrenel’s clients. The workshop focused on the social, environmental and economic development of host communities and the protection of biodiversity in the Niger Delta. Participants included members of host communities, energy companies, community health and biodiversity experts both from Nigeria and international organisations, and Federal, State and Local  Government representatives. The workshop explored more effective ways to improve the interaction between benefactors and their host communities, minimise the impact on and protect wildlife in the area, providing energy in a sustainable way to host communities, and as well as enhancing the organisation and structural framework associated with providing benefits and support to host communities in a more sustainable way.  Many examples of best practice emerged which, through shared learning, may be of benefit to other operating companies and communities in the Niger Delta.

Countryside Alliance Shale Oil and Gas Study

Shale oil and gas development in the UK is currently under evaluation by several companies and has received significant government support. Transposing or adopting the US model for such an industry could have a profound impact on the UK countryside and in recognition of this the Countryside Alliance, sponsored by the late Mark Donegan, commissioned Petrenel to undertake a study to describe the background to the shale business, the state of the emerging industry in the UK and how it might evolve. Petrenel combines the technical insight of how an oil and gas operation functions with the ability to audit the environmental impact. This report analyses the effects a shale operation could have on the UK countryside and how areas of concern might be addressed.  Click here to download the full report. PDFsymbol
